On 27 and 28 June 2007 PIAC conducted a national workshop for the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission on the recently formulated United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The workshop brought together peak disability groups from around Australia, all of the State, Territory and National Disability Advisory Councils as well as representatives from state and territory anti-discrimination statutory bodies. The first part of the workshop focussed on ensuring there was a common understanding of the Convention and the process that the Australian Government will go through to determine whether or not to ratify the Convention. The second part focussed on the development of strategies to advocate for ratification at all levels of government. The attached report outlines the workshop sessions and outcomes. Also relevant is the Background Paper, the media release of the Federal Attorney-General , the Hon Philip Ruddock MP, who addressed the workshop on 27 June 2007, and the workshop Communique endorsed by all those who attended.
