In 2011, the Australian Bureau of Statistics found that 1.2 million Australians with a disability had difficulty using public transport.
Without access to public transport, many people with disability are excluded from aspects of public life that many take for granted – employment, education, family and communal life, sport and much more.
PIAC has successfully run a number of test cases to improve the accessibility of public transport, including Graeme Innes v Railcorp and Julia Haraksin v Murrays Australia Ltd.
These cases highlight some of the challenges faced by people with disabilities using buses and trains. They have paved the way for lasting change to improve accessibility for people with physical disabilities.
