Case Study 3: Joe avoids bankruptcy

Joe (not his real name) was homeless. During a period of serious illness he accrued a significant credit card debt. Joe came to an HPLS clinic to seek advice about bankruptcy.

The HPLS lawyers gave Joe advice on the processes and ramifications of bankruptcy, and also told Joe about other options to manage the debt.  One of these options was a claim under his credit card insurance policy.

The lawyers successfully secured a payment of $10,000 from the insurance company. This payment, along with Joe’s success in getting a job, meant Joe was able to make manageable payments towards the debt and avoid bankruptcy.
