Potential barriers to competition in the NSW and Victorian gas markets are identified in the recently released report, Gas Wholesale Markets and Retail Competition in NSW and Victoria.

Produced by Alviss Consulting Pty Ltd and Darach Energy Consulting Services, the report provides consumer advocates with essential information about the NSW and Victorian gas markets.

The report found that gas retail competition is ‘virtually non-existent’ in NSW. Only 30% of the state’s households are connected to natural gas, and the majority of these households are served by just three major gas retailers.

In Victoria, there are seven gas retailers serving close to 60% of the state’s households that are connected to natural gas.

PIAC’s Energy + Water Consumers’ Advocacy Program and St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria provided input into the report. It is available for download as a pdf from the PIAC website.
