The bill calling for marriage equality is doomed to failure. A full parliamentary inquiry would allow the arguments to be considered openly and with reference to the evidence, writes PIAC chief executive officer, Edward Santow.
If you want to achieve something but you know your strategy will fail, do you: (a) do it anyway, or (b) change your strategy?
If you answered (a), then you might just be a federal Labor strategist. When Labor’s Stephen Jones introduces his private member’s bill to legalise same-sex marriage today, he and almost everyone else will know that it’s doomed.
Labor MPs will be given a conscience vote. By contrast, the Coalition has indicated that its members will be required to vote ”no”.
Surely it’s time to take the politics out of this issue.
