PIAC was a signatory to a joint submission of consumer advocates to Treasury’s Consultation Regulatory Impact Statement – Protecting Consumers from Unfair Trade Practices. The submission was led by the Consumer Policy Research Centre.

The submission argues for a strengthening of consumer protections against unfair practices. In particular, the submission calls for a new prohibition to be ‘drawn broadly and prohibit any conduct or practices which are, or are likely to be, unfair.’

PIAC was a signatory to the submission as the recommended reforms would provide stronger protections to energy and water consumers. Particularly as our energy system continues to transform and become more complex, energy and water consumers are at risk of being impacted by unfair practices without sufficient recourse.
