Laura Russell

Criminal Solicitor, Women's Homelessness Prevention Service

Laura Russell

Laura joined PIAC’s Women’s Homelessness Prevention Service as a criminal solicitor in 2023. She is passionate about legal issues affecting First Nations people and women.

Laura works to reduce the criminalisation and incarceration of women in the legal system. She provides advice and representation to women charged with criminal offences who have experience of domestic and family violence or sexual assault. The service recognises domestic and family violence and sexual assault as some of the leading causes contributing to women’s criminalisation.

Prior to joining WHPS, Laura worked to improve police accountability and conditions for people in detention as part of PIAC’s Strategic Litigation team, where she acted for clients in civil claims against NSW Police and the Department of Communities and Justice in order to achieve systemic outcomes.
