Senior Solicitor, Asylum Seeker Health Rights Project
Jane leads the Asylum Seeker Health Rights (ASHR) project and has worked at PIAC as a Senior Solicitor since 2012. Launched in 2016, the ASHR project seeks to remedy a gap in protection by ensuring that immigration detainees in onshore facilities are afforded physical and mental healthcare that is commensurate with Australian community standards. For example, in 2018, PIAC filed litigation for our asylum seeker client who was repeatedly denied access to curative hepatitis C-care while held in immigration detention.
Before PIAC, Jane was the Director of Policy at the National Immigrant Justice Centre in Chicago. In that role, Jane led advocacy efforts on immigration detention in the United States, including as the Department of Homeland Security/NGO working group, co-chair. Jane worked with the immigration legal sector across the US on policy frameworks, strategic litigation and the use of administrative and international complaint mechanisms. Jane also worked closely with members of Congress and the Administration.
Before Jane lived in the United States, she was the Pro bono Coordinator for Minter Ellison’s Sydney office overseeing clinical programs and casework. Jane worked in the firm’s litigation practice prior to her appointment.
