Jane Leibowitz

Director of Strategy

Jane is the Director of Strategy at PIAC and works across the legal team to identify, scope and plan new projects. Prior to that, Jane led the Asylum Seeker Health Rights (ASHR) project at PIAC since its inception in 2016. Using test cases, complaint processes and advocacy strategies, the ASHR project seeks to ensure that immigration detainees in onshore facilities are afforded physical and mental healthcare that is commensurate with Australian community standards. Before 2016, Jane held the position of Senior Solicitor at PIAC working on criminal justice, prison, coronial and policing issues and their disproportionate impact on First Nations and young people.

Before PIAC, Jane was the Director of Policy at the National Immigrant Justice Centre in Chicago. In that role, Jane led advocacy efforts on immigration detention in the United States, including as the Department of Homeland Security/NGO Working Group co-chair. Jane worked with the immigration legal sector across the US on policy frameworks, strategic litigation and the use of administrative and international complaint mechanisms. Jane also worked closely with members of Congress and the Obama Administration.

Before Jane lived in the United States, she was the Pro bono Coordinator for Minter Ellison’s Sydney office overseeing clinical programs and casework for community, homeless and Aboriginal clients and agencies. Jane worked in the firm’s litigation practice prior to her appointment.
