Ellen Tilbury

Senior Solicitor, Strategic Litigation

Ellen Tilbury

Ellen joined PIAC’s Strategic Litigation team as a Senior Solicitor in 2015. She works to develop legal and policy responses to climate change with a social justice focus, recognising the disproportionate impact of a changing climate and the transition to a zero carbon energy system on groups already experiencing disadvantage. Ellen also contributes to PIAC’s Equality and non-discrimination legal practice and previously led the Mental Health and Insurance Project.  In her time at PIAC she has also worked on police accountability, rights of people in detention, and represented the interests of household energy consumers in litigation concerning the regulation of electricity pricing.

Prior to working at PIAC, Ellen worked as a Legal Advisor to the Judicial System Monitoring Program Timor-Leste, an independent NGO working to improve the legal system in Timor-Leste. She practised as a solicitor and Senior Associate at commercial law firm Allens for several years, where she was pro bono coordinator for the firm’s Sydney office and a volunteer lawyer for the Homeless Persons’ Legal Service. She has also worked as inhouse counsel at PwC.

Ellen holds a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws (Hons I) from Macquarie University, and is currently studying a Masters of Environmental Law at the University of Sydney.
