Police visited Megan’s home 153 times in less than two years. Now she is fighting back.

Megan* is like many Australian women: she is a single mum raising three children in NSW.

She has also been visited by police an extraordinary 153 times in 20 months, according to documents filed in court – but she is not accused of any crime.

In a major test case, the Public Interest Advocacy Centre has filed Supreme Court proceedings against the state of NSW for Megan and a second mother, Joanne*, alleging it was unlawful for police to enter their homes to check their teen sons’ compliance with bail conditions without a court order.

PIAC says this amounts to a trespass and is seeking damages for both women.
