PIAC made a submission to the Australian Energy Regulator’s (AER) Review of the regulatory framework for flexible export limit implementation.

In this submission we expressed support for accelerating the implementation of flexible export limits and provided recommendations to ensure associated governance frameworks are fit for purpose. Flexible export limits can enable consumers to extract greater value from their consumer energy resource investments (such as solar panels and batteries) through facilitating higher levels of export to the grid.

PIAC recommended making flexible export limits the default connection offer and allowing consumers to opt-out to a fixed alternative. This could provide significant benefits including better managing two-way energy flows, promoting more efficient network utilisation, and enabling higher uptake of renewables.
