PIAC made a submission to Treasury’s Statutory Review of the Consumer Data Right: Issues paper (the Paper). The Paper sought feedback on whether the statutory framework for the Consumer Data Right (CDR) provided benefits for consumers, increased competition and fostered innovation.

The CDR was initially implemented to create rights for consumers to control (and use) their own data, for their benefit.  PIAC outlined how this purpose has been eroded in favour of creating new markets and uses for consumer data, and the cost of consumer protections. We advocated for broad legislative reforms returning to the initial purpose of the CDR to ensure the priority is safety, security and consumer control.
