PIAC responded to the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources’ consultation on the Gas Fired Recovery Plan.

We advised we do not support the measures proposed in the Gas Fired Recovery Plan, as they will not deliver the Plan’s intended benefits, while endangering urgent efforts to address climate change and presenting an unacceptable cost and risk to consumers and the community.

PIAC made recommendations the Government assists gas dependent consumers’ ability to afford gas where they are unable, and to assist these consumers transition to away from gas altogether.

Subsidising gas infrastructure will not lower costs for end users and is an ineffective means of stimulating economic recovery. Increasing fossil gas supply and use is incompatible with Australia’s international climate commitments and will worsen already catastrophic climate change. We advised we support policies that couple decarbonisation with job creation at least cost and risk to consumers.
