During the COVID-19 crisis, we were confronted with the need to make adequate shelter universally available as a matter of public health necessity.
High quality temporary accommodation was provided for rough sleepers, people utilising integrated support services, and other people entering homelessness, such as people leaving prison. With an existing severe shortage of social housing, an expected long-term economic down turn, and limits on the availability of crisis accommodation, we need to urgently consider what will happen next.
How can we make sure that the economic hard times that may be coming won’t cause an avalanche of homelessness? How do we harness this opportunity to create a healthy, inclusive community where everyone has a right to adequate shelter?
Hear from Katherine McKernan (CEO, Homelessness NSW), consumer representative, Damo (PIAC’s StreetCare committee) Sharlene McKenzie (Manager, Aboriginal Services, 3Bridges Community) and Grace Rullis (Manager Homelessness Services, Haymarket Centre) as they discuss issues facing people experiencing homelessness, and homelessness services, as the COVID-19 crisis eases.
The panel discussion will be moderated by Roslyn Cook (PIAC’s Managing Solicitor, Homeless Persons’ Legal Service) and will be followed by a Q&A.
