Ryan Whittard & PIAC win Walanga Muru awards

PIAC is delighted to announce that Ryan Whittard received the award for Cadet of the Year, and PIAC the award for Placement of the Year, at Macquarie University’s annual Walanga Muru Deadly Ball.

Walanga Muru, which is located at Macquarie University, supports the development of Aboriginal leaders of the future by providing opportunities for Aboriginal students and university staff.

Over the past three years PIAC has hosted two Walanga Muru cadets in the final stages of their law degree. Cadets have worked on a range of matters alongside solicitors in our strategic litigation team.

‘We are very pleased to be supporting the Walanga Muru cadetship program as part of our commitment to reconciliation,’ said PIAC CEO, Jonathon Hunyor.

‘Walanga Muru cadets make a wonderful contribution to PIAC’s work and we hope that we have been able to build the skills and confidence of cadets in public interest law. We congratulate Ryan on this well-deserved award.

‘PIAC’s award for Placement of the Year was a welcome surprise and I especially congratulate Julia Mansour, who runs our professional placement program, on this recognition of her work with the cadets,’ said Jonathon Hunyor.

Ryan Whittard said: ‘I am really happy PIAC received this award. PIAC is an incredible organisation and I feel proud to work alongside such passionate and talented people each week. A special thanks to Julia for being a remarkable mentor and continually teaching me the many ‘tricks of the trade’.
