Rainbows bright at firms

‘A “fairly sedate afternoon tea” might have been the order of the day for Australia’s chief statistician David Kalisch after revealing the historic Yes vote, but for lawyers it was bubbles.’

‘Public Interest Advocacy Centre CEO Jonathon Hunyor says his office, along with the Human Rights Law Centre and Justice Connect, switched to rainbow-coloured lanyards and “popped a cork” at 4pm (reaching for the bottle put on ice after it lost its High Court bid to stop the survey); they were beaten by half an hour by the eager King & Wood Mallesons Melbourne office; rainbow socks, ties and ribbons were sported at a viewing party held by Ashurst’s LGBTI and allies network; Allens’ diversity team ALLin held a lunch while Melburnians took morning tea; and a crowd from Gilbert + Tobin gathered on one of the floors, where tears were catching as long-standing partner Peter Waters gave a moving speech on feeling like “the other” for too long.’
