New commission announced to improve police oversight

Last week, the NSW Government released its response to the Tink review of the oversight mechanisms for the NSW Police Force.

In a welcome move aimed at increasing accountability, the Government has announced that a new Law Enforcement Conduct Commission will be established in 2016 and become operational in early 2017. The Commission will be responsible for detecting and investigating serious misconduct and corruption, providing ‘real time’ oversight of critical incident investigations and overseeing complaints handling.

PIAC has been calling for an independent body to oversee police for many years and has welcomed the announcement. We will be closely monitoring the implementation of the new arrangements over the coming months to ensure that the body is equipped with the statutory powers and resources it needs to properly and effectively fulfil its mandate.

PIAC’s submission to the Tink review is available here.
