RailCorp in court on discrimination claims

Australia’s Disability Discrimination Commissioner is taking his fight with RailCorp over faulty audio systems to the federal court.

Commissioner Graeme Innes, who is blind, has lodged more than 40 complaints about inaudible station announcements.

Mr Innes says vision-impaired people rely on the announcements because they can’t read information displayed on boards.

On Friday, Mr Innes said mediation with RailCorp on the issue had failed and he would now take the matter to court.

In a statement, Mr Innes’ lawyers said they would argue the failure of RailCorp to provide audible announcements was a breach of federal disability discrimination law.
