Calls for inquiry into Abu Ghraib abuses

Activist law group, the Public Interest Advocacy Centre (PIAC) is calling for an inquiry to assess what the Australian Defence Force and government knew of abuses at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

The inquiry should also include Australian Defence Force conduct in Iraq and Afghanistan when prisoners were automatically handed over to the US military.

It follows the release of a large number of defence documents following a protracted freedom of information case mounted by the centre.

PIAC chief executive Edward Santow said the documents raised some very concerning questions.

“A number of question remain unanswered. We need a full independent inquiry to get to the bottom of those issues,” he said on the PIAC website.
