Consumers welcome greener energy

Consumers have welcomed today’s announcement of new targets for the supply of renewable energy in NSW. The Public Interest Advocacy Centre (PIAC) says the whole community will benefit from renewable energy being mandated.

The new scheme promised today by the NSW Government will require energy
retailers to provide every customer with at least 10% of their electricity from
renewable generators.

‘This scheme is a simple and fair way to get better environmental outcomes for NSW’ said Jim Wellsmore, PIAC Acting Principal Policy Officer.

PIAC had been calling on the Government to consider mandatory targets since the announcement of changes to the existing Green Power program were announced in January.

The Government’s promised mandatory targets effectively will see every household buying 10% of their electricity from Green Power generators. This means lower greenhouse gas emissions across NSW.

‘We agree with the Premier that the community wants early action on greenhouse gases and climate change’ said Jim Wellsmore.

‘Renewable energy does cost more but this scheme will make it manageable for consumers’ he added.

PIAC is a leading legal and policy centre with a specialist project on consumer utility issues.
